Pregnant and want to prepare for pumping breast milk?
Whether you're planning to exclusively pump or pump at work, there are a few things you can do to get ready before your baby comes.
1. Get a breast pump
You may qualify for a free breast pump through insurance. You can usually work directly with a medical device company like to get it. Most people will want a double electric pump (with a battery, if possible.)
If you're able to get your pump before birth, learn how to put your pump parts together and get familiar with the setting options. If your pump has a battery, charge it.
3. Sterilize your pump parts
Most breast pump manufacturers recommend sanitizing your pump parts before the first use. Check your instruction manual to confirm which parts should be sterilized.
I would suggest getting the following:
- wash basin for washing bottles and pump parts
- hands-free pumping bra
- extra set of pump parts
- a few nursing tops
If you get the okay from your healthcare provider, practice hand expression. This is a useful skill to have, and you may be able to harvest some colostrum to feed your baby.
