When I went back to work after having each kid, wardrobe was a bit of a challenge. I had some dresses that I could still fit into, but they were not breastfeeding friendly clothes – they zipped up the back, and I basically had to completely take them off in order to get ready to pump.
Nursing tops aren’t just for nursing parents – people who pump breast milk need easy access, too. Plus, when you’re pumping, in most cases, you need to be able to easily access both sides at the same time – not just one.
Nursing tops also allow you to pump a lot more comfortably versus just lifting up a normal shirt.
(Personally, I have never liked pulling up my shirt to pump and then feeling cold – especially when the bottles resting against my stomach are also cold. Feeling exposed and chilly while you pump isn’t fun, and the stress associated with that discomfort is not good for your supply, either.)
Breastfeeding friendly clothes also allow you to pump in public with a lot more discretion. You don’t need to expose your stomach while you get situated – you can just hook yourself up to pump hands-free with a nursing cover and keep the rest yourself fully covered with your clothing.
Pumping-Friendly Dresses and Tops
Below are a few of my favorite pumping-friendly dresses.
Navy/White Nursing Dress with Pockets and Hidden Zipper from Nursing Queen
This super cute (and comfortable!) Nursing Queen dress has hidden zippers at the bust to allow for easy access to both sides as once – it’s perfect for pumping.
It hits me right above the knee (I’m 5’4″) and has pockets. I normally wear a size medium and am wearing one here. (If you’re between sizes, I might go down a size.)

You can attach the dress to your nursing bra’s hook to make getting situated for pumping easier.

This Navy Ruffle top is really versatile and cute. It’s also flattering if you have a postpartum belly that you’re not thrilled with.
This shirt has hidden zippers that you can unzip for pumping or nursing, and both sides can easily be accessed at the same time.
