What is pumping spray?

Pumping spray is a liquid that you can apply to your nipples or to your breast shields. You just spray each breast shield once from about 1-2 inches away to lubricate them.

Usually, pumping spray contains coconut oil, olive oil, or a combination.

Why use a pumping lubricant?

Some people find that pumping breast milk is painful for them. Pumping should never hurt – so it’s important to figure out what’s causing the pain and find a solution.

The most common reason for pain is using the wrong breast shield size. Breast shields are sized to fit your nipple, and can come in different sizes from 15mm to 36mm.

If you use a size that’s too small, your nipple won’t be able to more freely in the tunnel, and will rub too much against the sides.

If you use a size that’s too large, too much of your areola will get pulled in, which can cause pain and inflammation.

Once you have the right size breast shield, if you still are having pain with pumping, a breast pump lubricant may help by reducing the amount of friction and moisturizing your nipples while you pump.
