What is the Motif Luna Breast Pump?
The Motif Luna is a great double electric breast pump for working moms.
While it’s a newer pump and maybe not as widely used as other breast pumps, it is very similar to the Spectra S2.
What are the pros of the Motif Luna?
Some of the advantages of getting a Motif Luna include:
1. It’s powerful and effective
It’s a powerful and very effective pump. Many women who had used both the Luna and other pumps said that they emptied faster with the Luna. (Motif has also done research on the subject.)
2. Settings are flexible
You have a lot of flexibility in the settings that you use on your pump.
With most pumps, you are able to change the vacuum speed (the strength of the suction); the Luna also allows you to adjust the cycle speed (how frequently the pump pulls).
3. Has LED and backlight
Many users really like the LED and backlight; they found that these made going back to sleep after middle of the night pumping sessions much easier, as it’s possible to pump without turning the lights on.
4. It’s closed system
The Luna is a closed system pump, which means no milk in the tubing.
5. There is a rechargeable battery option
You have the option to buy a Luna with a rechargeable battery or one that requires you to be connected to an outlet. (The one with the rechargeable battery is about $30 more.)
This is key for being able to pump on the go or even just not be tied to your wall at home.
6. Breast shield options
You get two different sizes of breast shields – 24mm and 28mm – included with the pump.
Here’s a closer look at how the Motif Luna looks and works:
What are the cons of the Motif Luna?
There are also a few disadvantages:
1. The noise level is a bit loud
The pump isn’t especially quiet (but it’s not as loud as some other pumps either).
2. Portability
It’s on the bigger side, so it’s not the most portable of pumps.
Getting the option with a battery does help with portability, but it’s still a little large.
Motif Luna Pump accessories
Because the Motif is a less widely-used breast pump, it may be difficult to find replacement pump parts or bottles at a brick and mortar store near you.
As a result, I would recommend buying a few extra sets to have on hand in case the ones that come with your pump break or are lost.
Another option is to figure out how to hack your pump to use Spectra or Medela breast pump parts.
Using the Luna with Spectra pump parts
The Spectra parts are very similar, and swapping them out is fairly straightforward – you just attach the tubing to the Spectra parts instead of the Motif parts.
As Spectras have become more popular, their replacement pump parts are seen more often at Target and other stores.
Using the Luna with Medela pump parts
It’s pretty easy to use Medela breast pump parts with the Motif Luna using Medela tubing.
All you need to do is take off the yellow end of the tubing that plugs into the pump, and it will fit into the Motif Luna tubing port. Some people are able to pull it off; you can also cut it off.
If you’re still using your Medela tubing with a Medela pump, buy an extra set of Medela tubing to do this.
What bottles are compatible with the Luna?
The Luna uses wide-mouth bottles. Spectra and Avent bottles are also compatible with the Luna.
You may be able to pump into narrow-mouth bottles with an adapter like this one.

Motif Luna Breast Pump review: Bottom line
The Motif Luna isn’t one of the best known brands, but almost everyone I’ve interviewed who has used it loves it.
The Luna will work great for either a working mom or an exclusive pumper. I would recommend getting the option with the rechargeable battery if possible.
(You may be able to get a Motif Luna free through insurance. Check out your eligibility here.)

I would love to use the medela pump parts with my motif Luna but I’m concerned about using just the one port for double pumping. Will this impact the suction at all?(will it be half the power?)
Thank you!
Amanda Glenn, CLC says
Hi Liz! As long as you cover up the other port with the port cover, it will be fine! If you don’t cover it, the suction won’t work. I hope that helps!

I find it very similar to spectra. The one pro that I would add is that it remembers what setting you had it on when you finished last time. Whereas my spectra always starts on expression so when you turn it on it is really strong and kinda shocks my nipples. Whereas I always end my motif Luna in massage mode so when I start the next pump session it is always on massage and doesn’t cause as much damage to my nipples.

Very similar experience to Mayra’s comment. I am an exclusive pumper, almost 5 months pp, and have had two Lunas die on my out of nowhere now. Both times they just stop suctioning, first after about 5 weeks of using it as my sole pump and second after 3 months of using it as my secondary pump. I like it when it works and like the size/shape better than Spectra, but I’d recommend people avoid this as it is unreliable.

I am 3 months pp and exclusively pumping. I love this pump when it works ! it is a quite pump, it is fast empties me in 10-15 mins typically. However this is the second time I’ve had to request a replacement pump because the pump just stops suctioning. I am not sure why this is happening, but the first time it happened after just one month of use and now it just happened again after 2 months of use. They did send me a new pump and it took 3 -4 days before I received the replacement pump. For this reason, I am disappointed and would not recommend this pump as it is not reliable.

Love love love this pump! I got it free with insurance through Aeroflow. The first one I purchased was the one that you had to be plugged into the wall. It died and motif sent me out a new one that was chargeable. What a game changer! I have been able to pump easily anywhere, even on the road. (Passenger seat). It’s been so freeing and helpful for me as an exclusive pumper. I get a really good supply from this pump. I’m currently 4 months PP and able to pump only 3-4 times a day now with this pump and feed my baby. Very grateful for this pump. Powerful and quiet.

I exclusively pump, by choice, but I used the hospital one and it worked very well, but when I got home I started using my Motif Luna that I got with my insurance and this pump has been absolutely amazing. I wasn’t able to breastfeed with my first daughter, and I didn’t even try with my second, but with my son and this Luna pump I am actually an overproducer. Within 10 minutes of pumping I am able to get anywhere between 14-20 ounces total, per session…I have been able to feed my son, build up two deep freezes full of stash, and also donate milk to 5 moms in need. I knew when I went back to work I would need something more handsfree that I could use in my office, so I bought the Willow 3.0. Spent a decent chunk of money on it and unfortunately, my supply took a serious hit. When I used the Luna, I could pump 10 minutes and get a really nice supply, but when I use the Willow, I pump for the full 25 minutes til it auto shuts off and I would only get maybe 8 ounces, and it was like that for every time I pumped. So I stopped using it unless I am in serious need. The Luna has been my go to pump though for sure!

Only downside is not having the size 21mm flange. I also purchased a Willow knowing I will be going back to work hoping for more freedom with a hands free pump but then my supply went down with the Willow. I recently traveled thinking the Willow would be convenient but the scare of my supply dropping when I was traveling kept me using my Motif Luna. I’m not sure if my body is just used to the Motif Luna, but exclusively pumping (not my first choice) has gone slightly easier knowing I can at least keep my supply up. Hope this helps someone.

I’ve been having a problem with the storage bottles if they happen to tilt or fall over completely my milk is spilled. How can I fix that using the stopper and screw top?
Shawna says
This is just random info I know because I checked into it and was able to save some money! Yay! If you need a smaller flange/shield size, like 21mm (what I needed), you need to register your pump and then email their customer service and they will send you the appropriate size for free! 🥳 I actually just did this yesterday, and they shipped them same day! Hope this helps someone!
Amanda Glenn, CLC says
Thank you so much Shawna! That is great info!

Thank you for this!! I was considering going with a different one for this reason alone!
