These cookies are oatmeal raisin M&M cookies, and what makes them festive is the color of the M&Ms. So while I’ve made these Christmas cookies using red and green M&Ms, you can do it with any holiday where the grocery store sells a bag of specifically colored M&Ms! Orange and brown for Halloween, pastel for Easter, etc.

(In this case, because I was making these in October and the Christmas bags weren’t out yet, I bought a gigantic bag and had my kids pick out all the red and green ones. That worked equally well!)

Holiday Lactation Cookies

Here are a few common questions (and answers) about these holiday lactation cookies!

How do these lactation cookies increase milk supply?

These cookies have three galactogogues – oatmeal (a LOT of oatmeal), brewer’s yeast, and ground flaxseed. (Galactogogue is just a term for a food or herb that seems to increase milk supply in some women.)

Where can you buy brewer’s yeast?

You may be able to find it in a health food store, but most grocery stores don’t seem to stock it. The easiest place to buy it is on amazon.

Can you make this lactation cookie recipe without brewer’s yeast?

Yes! Replace the two tablespoons of brewer’s yeast with two tablespoons of flour.

Can I use old fashioned oats instead of quick cooking oats?

Yes, you can substitute 3 cups of old fashioned oats for the quick cooking oats.

Can I use steel cut oats instead of quick cooking oats?

Steel cuts oats have a difficult texture and nutritional profile than quick cooking oats. If you try it, let me know how it goes!

Can I use chocolate chips instead of M&Ms?

Yes! Just swap the 1 cup of chocolate chips for 1 cup of M&Ms.

If I make holiday lactation cookies and serve them at a party, will my husband and grandma start lactating?

No. Even though these cookies have galactogogues in them, I promise they won’t make anyone who isn’t already breastfeeding start leaking breast milk.
