Idaho Jones Moxi
The Idaho Jones Moxi breast pump is a great portable pump – it’s an effective pump that is easy to use and perfect for pumping on the go.
Pros of the Idaho Jones Moxi
Here are all the advantages and disadvantages.
1. It’s very portable
This pump has a rechargeable battery, so you’re not tied to an outlet.
Additionally, it’s nice and small, and it has a handle on top, so it’s easy to carry if you need to move around the house while you pump, or if you need to pump outside their home.
2. Has three different modes

The Idaho Jones Moxi has three modes – stimulation, expression, and combo. Most breast pumps have stimulation and expression modes, but the combo mode is a little more unique and a great feature.
Modes are intended to help you get your milk to start flowing, and then once it does, to remove as much milk as possible.
Stimulation mode
Stimulation mode is sometimes called letdown or massage mode, and it’s the setting that most people start with when they sit down to pump.
Aside from the occasional leak, milk usually stays in your breasts when you’re not nursing or pumping. Stimulation mode can help trigger the release of milk from your milk ducts (this is known as a letdown) via light and fast suction.
![what does a letdown look like? dribble at first, then spray, then back to a dribble](https://exclusivepumping.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/letdown_small.jpg)
Expression mode
After your milk lets down – you may notice that the milk starts spraying and/or feel a pins-and-needles sensation – most people find that switching to expression mode yields the most milk.
Expression mode is slower and stronger suction that the quick and light suction used in stimulation mode.
Combo mode
Combo mode combines stimulation and expression mode in an effort to elict second or third letdowns when pumping.
(When your first letdown finishes, that doesn’t mean that you don’t have any milk left in your breasts. Often, if you keep pumping, you are able to get your milk to let down again, and get a decent amount of additional milk.)
The way that combo mode works is combining five “stimulation” (light and fast suction) pulls with five “expression” (slow and stronger suction) pulls to get your milk to let down again. This is a pretty cool innovation that you don’t see in most breast pumps.
3. You have the ability to either single or double pump with it
![How to set up the Idaho Jones Moxi for single pumping and for double pumping](https://exclusivepumping.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/single_vs_double.jpg)
Sometimes, you only want or need to pump on one side. For example, if you’re working on increasing supply on your slacker boob, you might want to pump on only that side for a few minutes at the end of your normal pumping session.
This is easy to do on the Moxi – you can just unplug your tubing on one side and cover the tubing port with the port cover.
4. Comes with silicone breast shields
Many people find silicone breast shield more comfortable and effective than plastic ones, because the nipple is “gripped” differently.
Cons of the Moxi
There are also a few disadvantages of the Moxi.
1. Combined flange/duckbill
While I’ve seen this configuration of pump parts in other brands of breast pumps, it’s not my favorite. Here, the flange and duckbill are combined into one piece that you slide inside in the connector.
This can be a little awkward to assemble, but my main concern is breast pump part replacement. Duckbills generally need to be replaced more often than other types of pump parts, and you can usually get a whole box of them relatively inexpensively.
With this setup, when you want to change the duckbill, you have to buy a whole new flange, which is a little more pricey.
2. Only comes with one size breast shield
If you’re not sure what breast shield size you need, you might have to buy a few different sizes to find the right one for you.
The 25mm flange comes standard, and 19mm, 21mm, and 29mm breast shields are available separately.
Idaho Jones Twain

The Idaho Jones Twain has a lot more bells and whistles than the Moxi. Let’s go through everything it can do.
Pros of the Idaho Jones Twain
Here are some of the advantages of this pump.
1. Has dual breast pump motors
One of the coolest things about this pump is that it has two motors – one for each side. This means that each side can use different settings, so if you need stronger suction on one side and gentler on the other, you can pump that way.
Additionally, you have the ability to pause one or both sides while pumping.
2. Has a rechargeable battery
Like the Moxi, it has a rechargeable battery, so you’re not tied to an outlet.
3. Includes a child lock

If you have an older baby or a toddler who is fascinated by your pump and loves to push buttons, you can save yourself some hassle (and potentially some pain!) by setting the child lock when pumping.
To enable it, press the + and – buttons on the left side at the same time.
4. Ability to mute the pump
If you need to be quieter – say, if you’re pumping in the middle of the night – you can mute the beeping sound that the buttons make. (The actual motor is not quieter, however.)
To do this, you push the + and – buttons at the same time on the right side.

5. You can set an alarm for your next pumping session
If you pump at regular intervals, you can set an alarm on the pump to notify you that it’s time for your next pumping session.
For example, say you pump every three hours. When you’re done pumping, you can set an alarm for your next pumping time (in 15 minute increments).
Once it’s set, you’ll see the countdown start.
Cons of the Twain
In addition to the two cons mentioned above for the Moxi (the combined breast shield and duckbill, as well as only coming with one size breast shield), it is a somewhat complicated breast pump.
1. Has a bit of a learning curve
As I mentioned earlier, this pump has a lot of bells and whistles – which can take a while to learn how to use. The Moxi is pretty straightfoward and most people wouldn’t need more than a few minutes to figure out how to use it.
The Twain does a lot more, but I’d make sure you have a good hour or so to spend familiarizing yourself with and testing out this pump to get the hang of it.
You can see more of how this pump works in the below story:
Overall
Both of these are great pumps, with different pluses and minuses. I love the Idaho Jones Moxi for someone who needs a simpler, portable pump, and the Idaho Jones Twain for anyone who needs the specific features that it offers.
