This week (August 1st through 7th) is World Breastfeeding Week!
Because exclusively pumping isn’t what most people think of when they think of breastfeeding, it can be easy to dismiss what you’re doing as not really breastfeeding. However, exclusively pumping is breastfeeding (it’s just not nursing)! And if anyone deserves to be celebrated for all their hard work, I think it is moms that breastfeed via pumping. After all, as an exclusively pumping mom, you pump breast milk, wash pump parts and bottles, and bottle feed your baby every day without fail. You can never take a break from pumping, even when your nipples are cracked and bleeding or you have the flu.
To recognize and celebrate everything that breastfeeding and pumping moms do for their children, Sarah Wells reached out to me about the Epic World Breastfeeding Giveaway that she’s hosting. It’s pretty awesome! There are three separate giveaways, each worth over $1,000. Each giveaway has an Abby Sarah Wells pump bag (exciting for those of you that were hoping to win the Lizzy bag!), a breast pump, and some great miscellaneous items.
I’ve used a few of the products included in the giveaway bundles – below are my favorites!
I love this thing. I am actually planning to write a whole post about my love for the Pumparoo. Basically, instead of using Ziploc bags to store your pump parts in in between pumping sessions, you use this bag, which also comes with detachable little pad for you to pump your pump parts on as you hook up and detach yourself. It fits in well with the sustainability theme of World Breastfeeding Week, since it reduces the waste of Ziploc bags, and it’s opaque, so you can put it in your office fridge without arousing unwanted curiosity about your pump parts.
Additionally, there are tons of things you can use it for once you’re done pumping. I bought two, and in addition to using it for my pump parts, I’ve used mine for storing kids’ wet swimsuits on the way home from the pool, packing food or drinks where leakage is a concern, and as a mini diaper bag (just a few diapers and a travel bag of wipes) in my purse. Basically, you can use it pretty much any time you would have used a Ziploc bag, but it’s reusable (and cute).
The one thing to be careful of is that while it’s machine washable, you absolutely can’t put it in the dryer. That’s why I got two (to allow one to dry).
Pumpin’ Pals are a totally different kind of flange – they are angled and are supposed to mimic “a good latch,” thereby causing less (or hopefully no) pain when you pump. The design allows you to lean back when you pump, which can be a lifesaver for your back! A lot of women who have pain with other types of flanges find these work a lot better for them.
It’s marketed as a nursing pillow, but it definitely has its uses for exclusive pumpers, too. It’s perfect for sitting the baby in while you pump, for example – for tummy time, as a chair when they’re learning to sit, or propped up a bit while you feed a bottle.
There are also a bunch of things that I haven’t used that would love to try – the Spectra S2 pump (I’ve read great reviews), LilyPadz silicone breast pads (it would be great to have an option for the pool!), Booby Tubes from Earth Mama Angel Baby (they can be a warm compress for clogged ducts or a cold compress for weaning).
If any of this sounds interesting to you, make sure you check out the giveaway! And happy World Breastfeeding Week to all of you!
